For the launch of Winston’s AIR 2 TH, we spent three days on Brian Silvey’s home river outside Portland, Oregon, documenting the development of a new two-handed spey rod built for a wide range of steelhead fishing. Winston collaborated closely with Brian, a legendary Oregon guide and longtime friend of our founders, to refine custom tapers, sizes, and line weights into a truly versatile set of tools. Filming on the river and in the elements always brings its share of challenges, but this project was deeply personal, genuinely fun, and a privilege to help bring to life.

BRIAN SILVEY

Brian Silvey is an Oregon native, lifelong steelhead guide, and one of the most respected voices in two-handed rod design. After nearly a decade developing spey rods with Winston, his experience, intuition, and time on the water have become central to the success of the brand’s world-renowned program. He is also a true character with a generous spirit, and he made the shoot feel effortless, from breaking down the design process to delivering a fish on the final day.

BEHIND THE DESIGN

We sat Brian down to talk through the collaborative design process with Winston’s rod team in Twin Bridges, Montana. Working across state lines, Brian tests new rods year-round on Oregon rivers with both his clients and on his own time, then shares feedback and refinements with the Winston team until every taper, weight, and detail feels right.

The campaign was built around three distinct journeys moving toward the same destination: the steelhead returning from the ocean, the rod taking shape in Twin Bridges, and Brian Silvey’s journey as the angler putting it to work. Across the film and supporting assets, we moved between those perspectives to show how fish, craft, and experience ultimately converge on the water.
